E-prescriptions are required for all hospitals from June 30, 2023

On July 12, 2022, the Ministry of Health issues the Circular No. 04/2022/TT-BYT on amending and supplementing a number of Circulars on prescribing drugs in electronic form.

Accordingly, Clause 3, Article 1 of the Circular 04 amends Article 6 of the Circular No. 27/2021/TT-BYT on the implementation roadmap on prescribing drugs in electronic form as follows:

- Before December 31, 2022: Applicable for hospitals of level 3 and higher.

- Before June 30, 2023: Applicable for other medical examination and treatment establishments.

Besides, the Article 10 of the Circular No. 52/2017/TT-BYT is also amended to require a medical examination and treatment establishments shall conduct e-prescribing in accordance with the Circular No. 27/2021/TT-BYT dated December 20, 2021.

In previous regulations, Article 10 of the Circular 52 only prescribes prescription in health facilities applying information technology:

The prescription shall be made up by computer aid and saved in software of the health facility.  “N” prescriptions and “H” prescriptions must be printed out and delivered to patients, and also kept by health facilities.

Besides, the Circular 04 also replaces the prescription forms prescribed in the attached Appendix with the Circular 52 in 2017 and Circular 18/2018 with the Appendices in this Circular 04/2022.

This Circular takes effect on September 15, 2022. Other medical examination and treatment establishments (not included in hospitals of level 3 and higher) still use the printed paper prescription in the old form to June 30, 2023.
